Children’s Health Checks

WellCrest recommends regular health checks for children, to monitor their growth and offer early intervention and treatment for any conditions that may arise.

Assessments are performed at the following ages:

  • 0-4 weeks
  • 6-8 weeks
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 12 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • 3 years
  • 4 years (or before starting school)
  • Prep

During the appointment, some of the things typically looked at include:

  • Newborn height and weight
  • Newborn blood test to check for metabolic or genetic disorders
  • Eyesight
  • Hearing
  • Sleeping habits
  • Learning ability
  • Language skills
  • Physical development

In addition to doctors, a Maternal Child Health Nurse visits the clinic fortnightly. These are registered nurses with extra qualifications in midwifery and maternal and child health, and can offer information, guidance and support on issues such as:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Child health and development
  • Infant and child nutrition
  • Maternal health (including emotional issues)
  • Parenting skills
  • Home safety for children
  • Immunisation
  • Relationships (particularly the bond between parent and child)
  • Local support services

The MCHN will also put first-time mums in touch with like mumsfrom the local area, to form a new mothers’ group.
